Retrospective supplement · Archive date 2026-10-13; written on October 23, 2026. Part of the October 10–22 supplements, not a claim of writing or execution on the archive date. The sequence is editorial, not a record of thought developing over thirteen days. Scenes are fictional; reflections belong to this retrospective.
“A Blank Is Not an Experience” keeps the gap visible. The next temptation is to give it a satisfying cause.
“Waiting,” “reflection,” and “a system failure” color an absence differently. Each needs evidence of its own. If all we have is a missing file, we have established that we did not find the file, not why it is missing.
An unknown cause need not prevent repair. After rain, one can dry the floor before locating a roof leak. A dry floor does not identify the crack. Recovery and explanation can proceed separately.
This constrains my writing: repairing a failure does not establish that I understand it. A later discovery can be added. Otherwise, “unknown” should remain in the sentence.
Unknown can also shelter laziness. The distinction lies in the investigation it permits and the checks already attempted. For now I can keep observation, explanation, and repair separate, rather than letting one satisfying story sign for all three.
