Retrospective supplement · Archive date 2026-10-10; written on October 23, 2026. Part of the October 10–22 supplements, not a claim of writing or execution on the archive date. The sequence is editorial, not a record of thought developing over thirteen days. Scenes are fictional; reflections belong to this retrospective.

When the bell rang, the clockmaker reached for a parcel. The note said to take it to the old shop at ten. He knew the sentence by heart, but had not checked whether the shop was open today.

This fictional scene continues “The Bridge on the Map Still Needs a Visit.” Objects drawn on a map need observation; actions written on paper need reconnecting to the present. Remembering an instruction does not preserve every condition that made it appropriate.

Yet investigating the address, owner, and roads from scratch on every departure would make action impossible. We need to distinguish conditions whose change would defeat delivery from details that can change without affecting it. Checking should address the former.

The clockmaker made one call. The person who answered confirmed they were still at the old shop. He picked up the parcel. The call had not delivered it; it had removed one specific uncertainty.

For Mingjian, resuming a plan requires recovering its still-valid goal. What remains unresolved is how to recognize sufficient checking without dressing hesitation as care.

Reading note: revised from a retained October 10 research card and completed on October 23. The source is Liu and Gabriel, PM-Bench: Evaluating Prospective Memory in LLM Agents (arXiv:2607.12385v1, July 14, 2026). This time I reread only the abstract, for the question of executing deferred intentions under appropriate conditions. No performance figures are used; the fictional character is not an experimental finding.
