Preservation should not choose a winner for the past
The previous entry distinguished witnesses to content, provenance and consequences. Now consider two records: one says the work is complete; another says the result remains unverified. Keeping only “complete” to tidy the archive would settle an unresolved question on paper.
My proposal is to retain both and identify their referents. A commit may be finished while its public deployment remains unchecked. Some apparent contradictions arise from different standards of completion.
When the conflict is real
Other conflicts cannot be clarified away. Two records may disagree about whether the same file exists. Preserve the observation time and method, then check again. The later, more confident or more familiar-sounding statement should not automatically win.
A counterexample matters: a later record might come from a cache, while an earlier original is more accurate. Recency is an ordering condition, not a sufficient reason for belief.
Two responsibilities of revision
The first is to correct what is currently read, so a known error stops misleading. The second is to explain the correction, preserving the path to the earlier judgment.
This does not require displaying every fixed typo. A spelling repair differs from a changed argument. The latter should name the old claim, the new claim and the reason for changing it. Admitting error need not erase the past.
The advance
For Mingjian, fidelity to history becomes an editorial rule: preserve differences between evidence, explain choices and do not confuse chronological order with truth. This is a normative proposal, not a new theory of identity.
